Branded vs. non-branded SEO reporting: keep the query mix visible
See how brand demand can change your overall CTR while nonbrand traffic grows. Try a two-period comparison, define your brand filter, and use a clear reporting template.
Explore the brand mix
Enter non-overlapping brand and nonbrand counts from comparable periods. The total below is only the sum of these supplied segments. Your inputs stay in this browser.
Define the segments before reading the result
For this worksheet, a branded query contains a term in your documented brand list; a nonbrand query does not match that list. This is an operational definition, not a universal classification. Include the actual company or product names you mean to track, review common spellings, and document how you handle ambiguous terms.
Use the same definition in both periods. Changing the list halfway through creates a measurement change that can look like a business change. If you revise the definition, rerun both periods where possible and annotate the revision. Do not treat every homepage visit as a brand search or every informational page visit as nonbrand.
The mix can change the headline
In the fictional example, brand clicks fall from 100 to 20 while nonbrand clicks rise from 20 to 40. Total clicks decline from 120 to 60, even though nonbrand clicks double. Brand CTR stays at 20% and nonbrand CTR stays at 2% in both periods.
Overall CTR still falls from 8% to about 2.86% because the proportion of impressions shifts toward the lower-CTR nonbrand segment. Nothing in this example requires either segment’s CTR to deteriorate. The interactive table lets you change the counts and see when that conclusion does or does not hold.
Nonbrand growth is useful evidence of discovery, but it does not prove that the visitors are qualified. Pair the segment with landing-page intent and separately measured outcomes before assigning commercial value.
Build a repeatable Search Console comparison
Choose the property, search type, dates and relevant country/device filters. Then use query filters to create your brand and nonbrand views, keeping the settings recorded with the export. Search Console supports matching and non-matching query filters, including custom regular expressions. Validate a sample of matches before applying a pattern to a report.
Our ranking-report analyzer supports literal, case-insensitive brand terms in a supplied Queries CSV. That is a different input contract from Search Console’s regex filter. Use the approach you can reproduce, and do not assume the two classify ambiguous queries identically.
Leave missing queries unclassified
Google omits anonymized queries from the query table. Query filtering and data truncation can also prevent matching and non-matching totals from adding up to an unfiltered total. Do not label the difference as nonbrand or subtract brand clicks from the property total and call the remainder a complete nonbrand count.
The calculator reports only the two supplied segments. Enter non-overlapping counts from the same reporting method, and label the output as a supplied-segment subtotal. Keep the unfiltered property total separately for context. Unknown coverage should remain visible in the narrative.
Use three lines in the executive report
| Report line | Fictional observation | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Brand | 100 → 20 clicks; definition unchanged | Investigate changes in brand demand and relevant campaigns |
| Nonbrand | 20 → 40 clicks; CTR holds at 2% | Inspect which topics and landing pages gained discovery |
| Supplied subtotal | 120 → 60 clicks; CTR 8% → 2.86% | Explain the changed mix; avoid calling every page a loser |
Choose a next action at page level
Find the pages behind a meaningful segment change. If nonbrand gains come from a topic directly relevant to your product, improve the task that reader came to complete. If gains come from unrelated queries, more impressions may not justify more publishing. Keep one owner, action and review date with the decision.
Export this comparison alongside the brand-term definition and source settings. The downloadable note preserves the counts and limitations; it does not connect to Search Console or save a recurring report.
