Where to get your data
- Open Search Console → Performance → Search results. Choose one period and record your search type, country and device filters.
- Enable Clicks, Impressions and Average position. Export the Queries table as CSV and select that file.
- Use English headings: Top queries (or Query), Clicks, Impressions and Position. Comparison exports and Pages files use a different structure. Limit: 2 MB and 5,000 query rows.
Rankings are diagnostic signals. They become useful when connected to search demand, landing pages, clicks, conversions, and the changes your team made.
Use distributions, not vanity keywords
A move from position 52 to 21 may be promising even without traffic, while a move from 2 to 3 can be costly. Show counts and weighted visibility across meaningful bands.
Explain page-level movement
Check whether the ranking URL changed, multiple pages compete, the result layout shifted, or the page lost relevance or links.
Pair ranks with Search Console
Third-party tracking offers controlled monitoring; Search Console shows actual impressions and clicks. Use both and document differences in location, device, and query coverage.

How often should I repeat this process?
Repeat it after major releases or migrations and on a regular cadence for pages that drive leads or revenue. Monthly is useful for active sites; quarterly may be enough for small, stable sites.
Which issue should I fix first?
Prioritize blockers that prevent crawling, indexing, rendering, or conversion. Then work from high-value pages and broadly repeated template issues down to isolated cosmetic improvements.
