Confirming You Were Hit by HCU
Not every traffic drop is HCU. Core Updates, manual actions, and algorithm changes to specific verticals all look similar in Google Search Console. Before treating this as an HCU problem, confirm the timing.
Open Google Search Console, go to Search Results, and change the date range to show 16 months of data. Look for the inflection point where traffic dropped. Then cross-reference with Google's published update dates (maintained at developers.google.com/search/updates/ranking).
HCU signals:

E-E-A-T and HCU are closely related — content that fails E-E-A-T evaluation is often the same content that the HCU classifier targets. Run a focused E-E-A-T review on your top 20 pages by pre-HCU traffic:
- Does each page have a named, credentialed author?
- Does the content demonstrate first-hand experience (specific, original detail, not just aggregated information)?
- Are claims backed by sources or the author's own experience?
- Is the page transparent about what the site is, who publishes it, and why?

5. Improve Page Structure and Heading Hierarchy
Poor heading structure is a signal that content was organized for keyword placement rather than reader comprehension. Review your key pages: does the heading hierarchy reflect a logical outline that helps a reader navigate the content? Or are headings written primarily to include target keywords?
Improving heading structure won't directly fix HCU, but it's part of the content quality signal — pages that are logically organized and genuinely navigable read differently to quality raters and probably to the classifier too.
6. Prune Low-Value Posts
Remove or noindex content that:
- Was created primarily to capture a search query with no genuine informational value
- Duplicates content available elsewhere on the site without adding anything
- Is outdated with no path to meaningful update
- Exists as a stub or placeholder with no real body content
The HCU classifier looks at the ratio of helpful to unhelpful content on the domain. Reducing the denominator (total unhelpful content) improves the ratio even before you add new content.
301-redirect removed pages to the most relevant surviving page. Don't orphan the removed URLs or leave them returning 404 — the redirect passes any residual link equity and prevents broken link issues.

The Recovery Timeline

You will not see incremental recovery between updates — the classifier recalculates on a schedule, not continuously. This means:
- Make all content improvements before the next Core Update
- Don't expect week-over-week improvements in Search Console
