How to Use People Also Ask for Keyword Research (PAA Harvesting Guide)
PAA boxes contain Google's view of related questions. Mining them gives you a content calendar in 20 minutes.
The People Also Ask box is Google's public map of how questions connect to each other. Most people glance at it, skim the first result, and scroll past. That's a mistake. PAA is one of the most underused free keyword research tools available — and the data inside it comes directly from Google's understanding of how topics and questions relate, not from any third-party estimate.
Mining PAA for 20 minutes per seed topic produces 30–60 validated questions that are genuinely searched, directly related to your topic, and often underserved by existing content.
How PAA works
When you search a query on Google, the PAA box typically shows 3–4 questions. These aren't random — they're the questions Google has determined are most closely related to your search based on aggregate search behavior and content analysis.
The mechanism that makes PAA powerful for keyword research: it's dynamic. When you click on any PAA question to expand the answer, the box doesn't just show you that answer. It loads 2–4 new related questions beneath or around it. Click one of those, and more questions appear. Click again, and the chain continues.
This is what researchers sometimes call "infinite PAA" — a branching graph of related questions that's theoretically infinite but practically finite for any given topic. Google stops surfacing questions once it runs out of semantically related queries with sufficient search volume.
The harvesting workflow
This method works manually in 20–30 minutes per seed keyword. No tools required.
Step 1 — Search your seed keyword
Open Google in an incognito window. Search your topic keyword (not a long-tail variation — start with the broad seed). Locate the PAA box, which typically appears after the first or second organic result.
Step 2 — Record the initial 4 questions
Write down or paste all 4 questions into a working document. Don't click yet.
Step 3 — Click the first question
Expand it. Note the answer source (it shows you which page is ranking in the featured snippet position for that question — useful competitive data). Now look at what new questions appeared.
Step 4 — Record the new questions that appeared
After clicking, PAA typically loads 2–4 new questions. Record all of them.
Step 5 — Continue branching
Click the next unclicked question in the list. Record the new questions it spawns. Repeat this process until:
- You've clicked every initial question
- You've explored 2 levels deep from each initial question
- Or you've spent your budgeted 20 minutes
For a broad seed keyword, 2 levels of expansion typically surfaces 25–50 unique questions.
Step 6 — Repeat for 3–5 seed variations
Each variation of your core topic may surface different question branches. "Email marketing" and "email marketing for small business" and "email marketing strategy" will share some PAA questions but diverge at the second level. Running 3–5 seed variations fills the gaps.
The PAA chain branching pattern
PAA questions branch in a predictable pattern based on semantic distance from the original query:
Level 1 — Directly related questions. Near-synonyms of the original query, sub-questions the original query implies. If you search "content marketing strategy," Level 1 might include "What is a content marketing strategy?" and "How do you create a content marketing strategy?"
Level 2 — Adjacent questions. These explore the topic from different angles: specific use cases, specific audience types, specific tools, specific problems. "What content marketing strategies work for B2B?" "How much does content marketing cost?" "What's the difference between content marketing and social media marketing?"
Level 3 — Tangential questions. These get further from the original topic and closer to adjacent topics. Useful for finding content gaps you hadn't considered, but increasingly likely to stray outside your core content strategy.
Most keyword research value is in levels 1 and 2. Level 3 is worth scanning but requires tighter filtering.
Converting harvested questions into article H2s and FAQ schema
PAA questions have two direct content applications:
H2 subheadings — Each PAA question is a question your audience is asking. If you're writing a comprehensive guide on a topic, the PAA questions for that topic are your H2 candidates. A guide that answers the top 8 PAA questions for its seed keyword will rank well not only for the seed but for each individual question — many of which have standalone search demand.
Run your complete list of harvested questions through a simple filter: Does this question belong in my article as a section? If yes, it's an H2. If it's a standalone article-worthy question with sufficient depth, it's a new content idea.
FAQ schema — Questions with short, definitive answers are strong candidates for FAQ schema markup. A page with FAQ schema appears in Google's rich results format, which displays the questions and expandable answers directly in the SERP — increasing CTR without changing your ranking position.
To qualify for FAQ schema, your page must have a section that explicitly answers the question (H2 or H3 with a direct answer in the following paragraph or list). Pages that use FAQ schema for questions they don't actually answer on the page get their rich results stripped by Google.
PAA data vs keyword tool data
The key difference between PAA data and data from Ahrefs or Semrush: PAA comes directly from Google's own search behavior analysis. It doesn't estimate — it reflects what Google has determined are the most related questions based on real user behavior.
The downside: PAA doesn't give you volume numbers. You know the question is searched (Google wouldn't surface it otherwise), but you don't know if it gets 10 searches per month or 10,000.
The mitigation: cross-reference your harvested PAA questions against GSC impressions data. If your existing content is pulling any impressions for variations of a PAA question, that confirms real demand. If a question is in PAA but your domain has zero impressions for it, it's still likely valid — you just haven't targeted it yet.
PAA as a content calendar
After a thorough PAA harvesting session on 5 seed keywords, you'll have 100–200 questions. Most of these questions are:
- Validated as real search queries (they're in Google's own data)
- Grouped by topic proximity (the branching structure tells you which questions cluster together)
- Available to compete for without a paid tool
Filter the list to questions that match your content strategy and audience. Group related questions together (they'll live on the same page as H2s or become a content cluster). Assign each group to a page. The groups with no existing page are your content backlog.
