Readability and SEO: Does Your Flesch Score Actually Affect Rankings?

Not directly. But indirectly via bounce, dwell time, and the unsaid Google rule about matching your audience's reading level.

Google does not use Flesch-Kincaid or any other readability formula as a direct ranking signal. There is no algorithm input that says "this page scored 72, boost it." But readability affects rankings through three indirect mechanisms that are measurable and real. Ignoring it is a mistake.

Google's Official Position

Google has been clear on this: readability is not a ranking factor. The search quality rater guidelines reference "clear and well-organized" content as a quality signal, but raters are humans evaluating pages for the quality feedback loop, not algorithmic inputs.

John Mueller confirmed in a 2021 tweet that Google does not use readability scores in its ranking systems.

So if you are using a readability metric as an optimization target — chasing a Flesch score of 70 the way you chase a content score — you are optimizing for a proxy that Google does not read.

The Indirect Impact: Three Mechanisms

1. Bounce Rate and Scroll Depth

A visitor who cannot easily read your content leaves quickly. They hit the back button and click the next result. Google's systems observe this through behavioral signals: time-on-page, scroll depth, and — most importantly — whether the visitor returns to the SERP shortly after clicking your result.

The official term is "pogo-sticking," though Google has been careful to say it doesn't use pogo-sticking as a ranking signal in the simplistic version. What it does use are aggregate quality signals that correlate with whether clicks result in satisfied users. An article that consistently sends readers back to the SERP will decline in rank over time, regardless of its content score.

Hard prose increases bounce rate. This is not a hypothesis — it is what conversion rate optimization research has shown consistently for two decades. When the reading experience is effortful, readers opt out.

2. Dwell Time

Dwell time — the amount of time a visitor spends on your page before returning to Google — is not a publicly acknowledged ranking signal, but it is a reasonable proxy for whether your page satisfied the query.

A 3,000-word article that takes a graduate-level reader 12 minutes to process and an average reader 20 minutes will be abandoned partway through by most visitors if the prose is dense. The same content restructured to read at a Flesch 65 might hold the average reader for 8 minutes. The difference in behavioral signals is significant.

3. The Audience-Match Rule

This is the most underappreciated readability principle in SEO. Your reading level should match your audience's reading level for the specific query — not be "as readable as possible" universally.

A query like "advanced React performance optimization" has an audience of developers. Dense technical prose is appropriate and expected. Writing that article at a 7th-grade reading level would look patronizing and thin.

A query like "how to start a blog" has an audience of beginners. Graduate-level prose with compound sentences and discipline-specific jargon will send most of those visitors away immediately.

The failure mode is almost always in one direction: publishers write at a higher level than their audience requires for the specific query. They are experts in their field writing for a beginner audience and failing to code-switch.

The 5 Readability Formulas

Flesch Reading Ease

The most widely cited formula. Scores from 0 to 100. Higher is easier to read.

206.835 − (1.015 × average sentence length) − (84.6 × average syllables per word)

The scale:

  • 90–100: Very easy (5th grade)
  • 70–80: Easy (6th grade)
  • 60–70: Standard (7th–8th grade)
  • 50–60: Fairly difficult (high school)
  • 30–50: Difficult (college)
  • 0–30: Very difficult (professional/academic)

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

Converts the Flesch Reading Ease into a US school grade level. A score of 8 means readable by an 8th grader. The formula is the inverse of Reading Ease:

(0.39 × average sentence length) + (11.8 × average syllables per word) − 15.59

Gunning Fog Index

Focuses on "complex words" — words with three or more syllables (excluding proper nouns and compound modifiers). Higher Fog index = harder to read. Most popular publications aim for Fog index below 12.

Coleman-Liau Index

Uses character counts rather than syllable counts, which makes it easier to compute programmatically. Correlates well with Flesch-Kincaid on most English-language content.

Automated Readability Index (ARI)

Also uses character counts. Often used in software readability tools for its computational simplicity.

For SEO purposes, Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level are the most useful because they are the most widely benchmarked and reported by SEO tools.

The Practical Targets

These are general guidelines based on audience and content type:

For most blog content targeting small business owners, bloggers, and indie developers — the core RankCrab audience — aim for Flesch 60–70. Anything above 70 is a bonus. Anything below 50 is a warning sign.

These targets are not rigid. A Flesch of 58 on a thoroughly useful article will outperform a Flesch of 72 on a padded one. The score is a diagnostic, not a guarantee.

What Affects Readability Most

Sentence length. The single biggest driver of readability scores. Long sentences with multiple dependent clauses score poorly. Break them up. Most readability problems are solved by splitting sentences, not by changing vocabulary.

Word choice. Polysyllabic words decrease the score. "Utilize" scores worse than "use." "Demonstrate" scores worse than "show." Default to the shorter word when meaning is preserved.

Passive voice. Passive constructions increase sentence length and reduce clarity. "The analysis was completed by the team" → "The team completed the analysis."

Paragraph length. Not captured by most readability formulas, but strongly correlated with web readability. Four-sentence paragraphs read faster than twelve-sentence paragraphs on screen. Aim for two to four sentences per paragraph for web content.

Jargon density. Readability formulas treat jargon as multi-syllable words, which penalizes it. More practically, jargon creates comprehension barriers for readers at or below the jargon's fluency threshold.
