How to Track AI Overview Citations (Free and Paid Methods)
You can't measure what you can't see. Here are the manual, free, and paid methods for tracking whether you're cited in AI Overviews.
AI Overviews appear on roughly half of all Google searches. They're the biggest change to SERP real estate in a decade. And yet, if you open Google Search Console right now, you'll find zero data on whether you're being cited in them.
That gap isn't an oversight — it's a business decision by Google. But it means you have to build your own tracking system. Here's what actually works.
The Visibility Problem
Google Search Console shows impressions and clicks for traditional organic results. It does not break out AI Overview citations as a separate traffic source. When a user clicks your link from inside an AI Overview, it registers in Search Console as a standard organic click — indistinguishable from a blue-link click.
This creates three problems:
- You don't know which keywords trigger AI Overviews citing your site
- You don't know how your citation rate changes over time
- You can't measure the impact of GEO optimizations without external tools
The only solution is to track AI Overview appearances and citations at the keyword level, outside of Search Console.
Manual Tracking: Daily SERP Queries
The free-but-labor-intensive method is querying your target keywords directly in Google and recording what you see.
What to record for each keyword:
- Does an AI Overview appear?
- Is your site cited (look for your domain in the inline citations or source cards)?
- What position is your site in the traditional results below?
- What date and time did you check?
Track this in a spreadsheet. Use a consistent browser (ideally a logged-out browser or incognito mode to avoid personalization) and a consistent geographic location if your targets are location-dependent.
Limitations: AI Overviews are query-specific and user-context-sensitive. The same query sometimes does and sometimes doesn't trigger an AI Overview. Manual checking gives you a snapshot, not a trend. For more than 10–15 keywords, manual tracking becomes unsustainable.
Free Tools
Otterly.ai
Otterly.ai is a free tool built specifically to monitor AI Overview appearances. You enter a list of keywords and it checks whether AI Overviews appear for those keywords and whether your domain shows up in the citations.
It's limited in query volume on the free tier, but for bloggers or indie projects tracking a focused keyword set, it covers the basics.
Browser Scripts and Extensions
Several community-developed browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox highlight AI Overview citation sources automatically when you perform a search. These don't give you historical data but speed up manual spot-checking significantly.
Search "AI Overview citation highlighter" in the Chrome Web Store — the landscape shifts frequently enough that specific extension names become outdated, but the category is active.
Search Console + UTM Correlation
A workaround some SEOs use: add UTM parameters to internal links in high-priority pages, then look for surges in direct traffic to those pages. If AI Overview citations drive traffic, the surge often appears in sessions that bypass referral tracking (since Google's AI Overview links sometimes strip referrer data).
This is imprecise and doesn't scale, but it provides a rough directional signal at zero cost.
Paid Tools
RankCrab AI Overview Citation Tracking
RankCrab's rank tracker includes dedicated AI Overview citation monitoring. You enter your tracked keywords, and RankCrab checks them daily — recording whether an AI Overview appears, whether your domain is cited, and tracking citation share over time.
The reporting shows citation rate by keyword, trends over time, and flags when your citation status changes. This is the feedback loop that makes GEO iteration possible: you make a structural change to a page, then watch whether your citation rate on related keywords improves over the next 2–4 weeks.
AthenaHQ
AthenaHQ tracks brand mentions and citations across AI search platforms including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, and Perplexity. It's positioned toward larger brands and agencies, with pricing to match.
Profound
Profound (formerly known as something else pre-rebranding) focuses on enterprise GEO monitoring. It tracks AI citation share across multiple LLM-based search platforms simultaneously. Enterprise-tier pricing — overkill for most small sites but relevant for boutique agencies managing multiple clients.
The Metrics That Actually Matter
Tracking for the sake of tracking is noise. Here are the metrics worth monitoring:
Citation share. Of the keywords where an AI Overview appears, what percentage cite your site? This is your core GEO KPI. Track it weekly.
AI Overview presence rate. What percentage of your target keywords trigger an AI Overview at all? This shifts over time as Google expands AI Overviews to more query types. Knowing this rate helps you prioritize: focus GEO effort on queries where AI Overviews are already appearing.
Citation consistency. AI Overviews aren't deterministic — the same query sometimes cites you and sometimes doesn't. Monitoring consistency (cited 7/7 days vs. cited 2/7 days) tells you how solidly established your citation is for a given keyword.
Traditional rank alongside citation status. Track your blue-link rank and AI Overview citation status together. The relationship is instructive: sometimes you rank #1 and don't get cited in the AI Overview. That's a signal your content structure needs work for GEO, even though your authority is sufficient for traditional SEO.
Setting Up a Tracking Workflow
Here's a practical setup for a small site or solo blogger:
Week 1: Baseline. Pick your 20 highest-priority keywords — the ones where you most want to win. Check each manually, record whether an AI Overview appears and whether you're cited. That's your baseline.
Ongoing: Automated monitoring. Set up RankCrab or Otterly.ai to monitor those 20 keywords daily. You'll get alerts or reports without manual checking.
Monthly: Review and act. Once a month, review citation rate trends. For keywords where you're consistently not being cited despite ranking well, look at the AI Overview content — understand what it's saying and which pages it is citing. Then improve your page's Q&A structure, schema markup, or entity clarity to compete.
Quarterly: Expand the keyword set. As you build a tracking rhythm, expand to your next tier of 20–30 keywords. Don't try to track everything from day one — you'll lose signal in the noise.
What Changes Move Citation Rates
Based on tracking data across GEO-optimized sites, these changes tend to move citation rates within 2–6 weeks:
- Adding FAQPage schema to a page that previously had no schema
- Restructuring the first section of a post as a direct Q&A (question H2, answer in paragraph 1 of that section)
- Updating publication date alongside substantive content refresh
- Adding an
llms.txtfile that explicitly includes the page

The sites winning in AI search right now are the ones that built tracking first. You can't iterate on what you can't measure.
